International Career

Debut at the Earlier Stage

Rahul embarked on his Test cricket journey during the 2014 Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, stepping in for Rohit Sharma and receiving his Test cap from MS Dhoni.

Despite a modest start with scores of 3 and 1 in his debut match, his fortunes changed in the subsequent test at Sydney where he opened the innings for the first time and marked his international debut century, notching an impressive 110 runs. His journey started when his name was selected in the top 15-man squad for the Indian tour to Bangladesh in 2015. At this time he was unable to seize the opportunity due to dengue fever.

However, he further got the opportunity for the Indian squad against Sri Lanka as Murali Vijay was injured and contributed his second century. In this game, he played as a wicketkeeper and he was further selected for the Indian Tour to the West Indies for the second TEST. He further scored the highest by scoring 158 runs.

Then he started playing one after another tournament with the Indian Team. However, he was replaced by Gautam Gambhir due to his injury.

In 2016-17 Test Series

In the 2016-17 TEST series against England Rahul missed another match due to his leg injury and came back in the fourth TEST but took leave for a significant impact.

The West Indies tour in 2016 witnessed Rahul’s emergence as a powerful T20I player, marking his first T20I century with an incredible unbeaten 110 off just 51 balls.

Although his outstanding performance couldn’t secure a win for India, it signaled his prowess in the shortest format.

New Record of KL Rahul

Notably, he set a new record as the fastest batsman to achieve centuries in all three formats within his 20th international innings, surpassing previous milestones. Nevertheless, an off-field incident in early 2019 led to his suspension along with Hardik Pandya.

Rahul’s subsequent performances displayed his versatility across formats. He reached milestones like his 1,000th T20I run and secured multiple man-of-the-match awards in various matches against teams like West Indies, Australia, and Sri Lanka, across ODIs and T20Is.

While he missed opportunities in the Test format due to injuries, Rahul made an impactful return during India’s tour of England in 2021.

Opening alongside Rohit Sharma, he displayed exceptional skills, scoring crucial runs and earning the man of the match title in the second Test.

His ability to adapt his technique, especially in English conditions, demonstrated his skill and resilience, culminating in being the second-highest run-getter for India in the series behind Rohit Sharma.

Notably, he showcased his explosive batting prowess by claiming the joint-fastest fifty in the tournament, achieving the milestone in a mere 18 balls against Scotland. Adding to his responsibilities, Rahul was also named as the ODI captain for the concurrent One Day series on the same tour after Rohit Sharma sustained a hamstring injury.

In December 2021, Rahul’s leadership journey took a significant turn. He was named the test vice-captain for the challenging away series against South Africa, stepping up when regular Vice-captain Rohit Sharma was sidelined.

Rahul’s leadership debut in test cricket happened during the second test against South Africa in January 2022, where he became the 34th Test captain of India.

Though he marked the occasion with a half-century, the team couldn’t secure a victory, succumbing to a defeat by seven wickets. Transitioning to ODI captaincy, he became the 26th ODI captain of India in the first match against South Africa.

Despite his efforts, India faced a series loss of 3–0 to South Africa. Rahul’s journey not only showcased his prowess as a batsman but also introduced him to leadership roles, adding depth and responsibility to his cricketing career.

2022 Asia Cup

During the 2022 Asia Cup, Rahul led the team as the stand-in captain in the final match against Afghanistan, marking a significant leadership role in his cricketing journey.

Making a highly anticipated return to cricket during the Asia Cup 2023 against Pakistan, Rahul showcased his resilience by scoring an unbeaten century, amassing 111 runs off 106 balls.
